U.R.Ananthamurthy

U.R.Ananthamurthy, like the other Kannada intellectuals, deliberately relooked at our established concepts, ideologies, structures and practices analyzing their validity in the contemporary world. As far as Indian post colonialism is concerned, it has imbibed western values, and has negotiated with western ideologies in a deep manner. India has welcomed democracy, equality and other systems of egalitarianism. Translations of Indian writings into English have introduced the cultural artifacts of Indian States to fellow States. English has networked Indian sub-continent with a pan-Indian framework. At this context U.R.Ananthamurthy’s works gain significance, as they reveal a Nietzschean attitude to society.
Nietzsche located himself outside the Greco-Roman-Christian intellectual framework, and questioned the established concepts of Europe. It took almost a century for people to understand the significance of his words. Nietzsche argued for a self-critical mode of thinking. He wanted us to check ourselves, especially, when we are in the Right. All the English translated works of URA reflect this ideology of self-criticism. Concepts that have been accepted socially as ‘superior’ have to re-examine themselves. What has been traditionally accepted as ‘Right’ cannot be left out without an assessment. We have to constantly question our stand, our attitudes and our approach. Otherwise, we will be led into the danger of narrowness, dogmatism and even being fundamental. Society has to renew itself to sustain its development.
Samskara poses certain crucial questions: Can’t a man change his caste? Is caste a permanent mark that cannot be changed? What about people who find the rules of a particular caste rigid that they find it difficult to follow? Bhava studies the complex human mind caught in social traditions. It locates these individuals in a morally backward situation. It is as if to prove that man, even in highly disciplined settings, still breaks the rules established by society. The novel moves in a Hawthornian style as seen in The Scarlet Letter, dealing with aspects of guilt, amorality and kinship. Bharathipura reads more like Raja Rao’s Serpent and Rope, negotiating Eastern values with Western values. The mainstream society is described with an ironic, mildly satiric tone, looking at India with western eyes.

We can describe URA as a writer who wanted to contextualize Indian society in a global framework. He thought that mainstream culture has to become self-critical, so that society evolves further in a more egalitarian way. He has tried to deconstruct rigid structures to achieve this. He has helped us understand that behind massive structures of social supremacy, there are ordinary men and women leading ordinary lives.

Gnanam

Gnanam
We are lost in  views of ourselves shaped by others
We are taught to think like our friends and enemies
We look at objects through the glasses of our caste
We analyze life via the medium of our social class
We understand the concepts through our teachers
We develop likes and dislikes like our mothers
We fail to develop any original thought ultimately.

Lost in this imagination of ideologies of hatred
Lost in ourselves of ourselves forever
We leave this body to mix with the dust
Unable to take it with us to heaven or hell
A life ruled by maya or fantasies, a rishi will say
A reality  that cannot be borne that the men run
Running away from the maya of life
A detached soul can leave his mother and daughter
A man is not bound by his flesh and its language
He can detach from his children quite easily
And term the sickening life to maya or rope.
Rope or snake they get confused and stay away

A woman cannot forget the child born out of her body
She cannot detach the mind from her suffering child
She worries and worries into a frenzy
Men termed her hysterical and crazy
Some might even have been burnt alive as witches
Who knows what really happened in prestigious
Households of superior quality and style?

This is the story of how philosophy
Stayed away from the cooking women
Toiling in hot kitchens or cold kitchens.

India and USA

India is moving towards strengthening of capitalism. The U.S. can invest in India in the following fields:
Science and Technology: to enhance quality research
Software Industry: to introduce the latest technology
Space: to create more space centers and create advancement
Automobile Industry: to develop environment friendly mechanisms
Education of high quality: to give impetus to quality education
Healthcare: to provide quality medical aid and to make available latest drugs in the market

India needs permanent U.S. support to be included as permanent member in United Nations Council.
India needs Uranium for building atomic energy.
India needs support in modernization of Defence Systems.
Indian Oil research can be strengthened with U.S. support.
India is a very big market for software products and U.S. can make use of this opportunity.
U.S. can introduce a favorable banking system in India that helps entrepreneurship grow. For instance, China encourages business men by lending money at a low rate of interest. This helps develop industrial productivity. China also encourages business men by charging very low rate for electricity. This is a successful model as it has boosted Chinese economic growth.  China has emerged as the largest exporter in the world with this support given to Chinese businessmen. U.S. and India can come together and bring changes in the global banking system using the Chinese business model.
Also, agricultural research can be systematized with U.S. India collaboration.
India has vast terrains with a fertile soil and this can be manipulated to produce food for the world with a well planned R & D.
